After-show review: InterTabac & InterSupply are back – with 12,100 visitors celebrating the comeback of the year in Dortmund

After a two-year break, the twin shows made a successful return in 2022 with a comprehensive programme of events and strong exhibitor line-up featuring over 600 exhibitors from 69 countries

The comeback of the year was a runaway success, as InterTabac and InterSupply picked up where they left off two years ago when Covid struck. The twin shows returned between 15 and 17 September with an even more varied supporting programme and over 600 exhibitors – including around 160 first-timers. And there’s more: the world's largest trade fair for tobacco products and smoking accessories and the international trade fair for the production of tobacco goods, e-cigarettes, pipes and shishas attracted 12,100 visitors – another excellent result. “These superb figures and the consistently favourable opinions voiced within the industry show that, even after the compulsory two-year break, the twin shows in Dortmund remain the foremost meeting place for the global tobacco industry,” said Sabine Loos, Managing Director of Westfalenhallen Unternehmensgruppe which owns and operates the Messe Dortmund venue.

Dortmund, 20 September 2022 – InterTabac, the world's largest trade show for tobacco products and smoking accessories, and the InterSupply which covers the manufacturing processes behind tobacco products, e-cigarettes, pipes and hookahs were back with a vengeance between 15 and 17 September, occupying nine halls at the Messe Dortmund exhibition centre. The global flagship shows for the tobacco industry attracted over 600 exhibitors from 69 countries and included around 160 first-time exhibitors at the venue, some of whom were presenting their products to a European audience – or indeed outside their home countries – for the first time ever. Innovations such as the International Cigar Pavilion and the now even more varied supporting programme were also extremely well received and well attended by visitors to the shows.

“The overall environment was difficult. The global political situation, faltering supply chains, the Covid pandemic and visa problems posed enormous challenges for the participants and for us as organisers. With this in mind, we're absolutely delighted that the shows have actually been able to improve on 2019,” reported Sabine Loos, referring to the high levels of exhibitor satisfaction. In fact, over 92% of InterTabac exhibitors were already able to say they want to take part again. This figure represents another year-on-year increase on 2019. InterSupply also reported significant growth in satisfaction levels, with nearly 90% of exhibitors already making plans to come again next year – another 7% increase since last time.

Large numbers of international visitors at the shows

This year, the who's who of the global tobacco industry was back in Dortmund, including well-known representatives of producers, wholesalers and the retail trade. A total of 12,100 visitors from home and abroad flocked to Dortmund, representing all major core target groups and business sectors including the classic tobacco retail trade as well as service station operators and newsagents. At nearly 50%, the proportion of visitors travelling from abroad to attend InterTabac and InterSupply was extremely high and included a major contingent from the US and Canada. The twin shows also registered high numbers of visitors from Asia, especially China, India, Indonesia and Japan. South and Central America, too, were represented strongly by visitors from countries such as Chile, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico.

InterTabac and InterSupply again recorded a high number of European visitors from Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands, Italy, France and Turkey. The response from within Germany was also great, accounting for around 50% of visitors. “So after the time-out due to Covid, we saw a high level of interest in catching up on new topics and trends in person at InterTabac & InterSupply, and enthusiasm at finally being able to engage person-to-person within the industry once again. This year once more, many visitors from the classic retail trade took the opportunity to connect with their colleagues and gain inspiration for their own line-ups,” added chief show organiser Sabine Loos.

International superstars at InterTabac: Mike Tyson, Ralf Moeller and Dan Bilzerian

This year, several international superstars from the US and Germany graced the comeback of the twin shows, with former world boxing champion Mike Tyson visiting the Futurola stand at InterTabac to promote his own collection, and German Hollywood actor and former body-builder Ralf Moeller appearing as a star guest, making himself available to visitors and posing for joint photos at the social media wall in the venue's ultra-modern North Entrance complex. Also appearing at InterTabac was US professional poker player Dan Bilzerian who boasts over 33.5 million followers on Instagram alone.

Thomas Schäfer, Chief Executive of the North Rhine Westphalia Retailers' Association, summed up his thoughts on behalf of the retail trade, saying: “InterTabac 2022 has remained true to its reputation of being the world's leading tobacco industry trade show.” Covid and war have been posing unimagined challenges to retailers. “In times like these, it's all the more important for us to engage person-to-person and to work together on solutions and innovations that will position us securely for the future. Nowhere else is it as easy for retailers to touch base with international manufacturers and suppliers, and get a compact overview of what the entire tobacco industry has to offer.”

Classic segment out in force again

International exhibitors from all relevant parts of the tobacco industry presented their businesses across a total of nine halls. The classic segment – featuring cigars, cigarettes, pipes, pipe tobacco and fine cut tobacco – was out in strength again this year. In Halls 4 to 7, exhibitors showed products such as selected cigars from family-run hand-made production facilities, limited editions and new, high-quality designs for pipe lovers. In the adjacent Hall 6, visitors found everything associated with the 'point of sale'. Here, various exhibitors were to be found, addressing the specialist retail sector and large wholesalers.

Just how happy tobacco retailers were with InterTabac 2022 was underlined by Steffen Kahnt, Member of the Board of Management of the German Federal Association of Tobacco Retailers (BTWE): “This year again, InterTabac was the leading platform for specialist retailers when it comes to innovations, networking and placing orders across all product segments. The variety on offer at InterTabac – from the main classic range to next-generation products – is simply unparalleled. In Dortmund you don't have to hunt down the trends – they're all here in open view. This presence and the personal interaction at the venue in Dortmund are just what the industry needs when it comes to working together to shape the future of tobacco as a cultural asset.”

NGPs still in vogue

Complementing the classic segments, the fashionable next-generation products (NGPs) were on show again this year, with a wide variety of heat-not-burn products, everything related to vaping, e-cigarettes and e-liquids, as well as potentially risk-reduced products (PRRPs) and cannabidiol (CBD) on show in the Westfalenhalle and in Halls 1 and 2. As in previous years, the opportunity to sample different products and flavours was again very much encouraged, enabling retailers, wholesalers and many other businesses to draw inspiration for their own ranges – even beyond the classic segment. “The NGP segment is a broad movement within the industry, and InterTabac & InterSupply are reflecting this by including an increasing number of exhibitors from this part of the market,” explained Sabine Loos. And that's not all, because Hall 8 and part of Hall 6 played host this year to shisha/hookah suppliers and associated accessory products. “Hookahs are very much still in vogue, and the range of products in this area was correspondingly diverse,” the chief show organiser continued.

Hall 3 was home to InterSupply, showcasing everything associated with the processes behind tobacco products. Messe Dortmund launched this international trade fair focussing on the production of tobacco goods, e-cigarettes, pipes and shishas back in 2015. At this, the 6th InterSupply, exhibitors once again presented their ranges of products for the production, processing and packaging of tobacco and liquids.

Extensive supporting programme appealed to visitors

For the second time, the twin shows featured a comprehensive programme of events covering all the current topics and challenges facing the industry. It was developed in conjunction with leading industry experts and thus offered real added value for all trade visitors. “After the first supporting programme was so well received at the last show in 2019, we've developed and expanded it. The offering, which centres on information and interactive sessions, went down well with visitors, and the events were all very well attended,” added Sabine Loos.

In the classic segment, for example, people once again had the opportunity to sample, smoke and sniff at the Cigar & Rum Pairing, with experts combining unusual ingredients to create entirely new taste experiences for trade visitors, also offering ideas for customer advisory sessions in the retail trade – among other things in combination with spirits. The 'Speed Fire Presentations on NGPs' produced in collaboration with DTZ featured a number of up-and-coming newcomers in the new-generation products segment. Naturally, the political situation in the tobacco market also featured prominently in the programme, with the European Confederation of Tobacco Retailers (CEDT) holding an open discussion forum on cutting-edge topics such as nicotine pouches, cannabis light, tobacco heaters and e-cigarettes.

“The global Covid pandemic has been a major challenge for the tobacco industry – and others – over the past two years, but we've used the break to our advantage and developed a lot of new content. Visitor take-up of offerings – both new and proven – at the twin shows has been superb, and people have been taking the opportunity once again to cultivate contacts and do business. Feedback from the industry has been absolutely great, and when you look at the stand bookings and ticket sales, it's clear the industry is still 100% behind InterTabac & InterSupply. I'm already looking forward immensely to InterTabac & InterSupply in 2023,” beamed Sabine Loos as she looked back at this year's shows.
