Outlook for InterTabac 2020
After InterTabac, the world’s largest trade fair for tobacco products and smoking accessories, in combination with InterSupply, convinced trade visitors at the Dortmund Exhibition Centre in September 2019, the organisers have already started their planning preparations for the new edition next year because InterTabac should delight exhibitors and visitors again in 2020. That requires extensive preparations. Initial accompanying programme items have already been determined. And it is already certain that there will again be new findings and trends to discover, not only by representatives of German tobacco retailers but also by all trade visitors.
In late summer this year, the 520 exhibitors from 47 countries knew how to convince the 13,800 guests with their offers covering tobacco products and smoking accessories on about 40,000 square metres of the Dortmund Exhibition Centre. Olaf Ruf, General Manager of Oettinger Davidoff AG, put the importance of InterTabac for the classic segment and all other segments into a nutshell: “As the major event of the tobacco industry on the European continent, InterTabac is a fixed date in our diary every year. This is where you can see the industry’s latest developments from close up. As a Swiss premium cigar manufacturer, we meet all important customers from the German and international markets here.” The objective of the InterTabac organisers is to delight exhibitors and visitors again in the coming year. For that purpose, they are already working on a new programme that should be very up to date again because important changes, especially in the classic segment, are pending in the near future and could affect the manufacturers and the product variety in the cigar segment. Although the system of traceability of cigars and cigarillos will not have to be implemented before 2024, the high investments will have far-reaching effects on medium-sized companies in the cigar industry.
Important Inspirations for the Retail Trade
The makers of InterTabac have already responded to that by planning informative lectures and seminars that have the political framework conditions for the classic retail trade as topic. Tobacconists can obtain and exchange information about this important topic during keynote speeches and get-togethers. Furthermore, the participants will find out about the current legal requirements that must be complied with.
Focus on Sales Promotion
Besides the knowledge of the legal situation, another success factor is sales promotion. Accordingly, InterTabac 2020 will also focus on this topic. Retailers in the classic segment will be able to take home valuable inspirations for their merchandise assortment or expansion. Shopfitting will be another topic: The optimum design of the selling space is becoming increasingly important in times of a highly differentiated product range.
Besides the comprehensive information offer, enjoyment will not be neglected either: Cigar tastings and pairings during which experts will create extraordinary compositions to allow trade visitors to have new taste experiences are again planned for InterTabac 2020. And cigar retail trade employees will learn directly how to recognise a good cigar and how it must smell and taste so that they are up to date and can optimally advise even demanding customers.
An Edge in Knowledge for Your Own Business Success
Steffen Kahnt, Director of the German Association of Tobacconists (Bundesverband des Tabakwaren-Einzelhandels e.V. – BTWE) emphasised InterTabac’s role for the tobacco retail trade: “Only those who will be there in Dortmund will gain the necessary edge in knowledge for their own business success. The successful tobacconist will meet all major players and renowned companies there. Innovations in the classic segment and the NGP segment are best explained live, especially as emotional and sensory experiences like smelling and tasting play an important role.” Kahnt continued: “After all, one thing should not be forgotten: The retail trade still earns 95% of its sales revenues with cigarettes, smoking tobacco, pipe tobacco, cigarillos/cigars, pipe and smoking accessories.” The German Association of Tobacconists (BTWE) will have a strong presence in Dortmund again in 2020.
Interested exhibitors and trade visitors should already make a note of the dates on which InterTabac and InterSupply will take place next year. “Dortmund is the ideal platform for small and medium-sized companies in the cigar and cigarillo industries to showcase their product portfolio and make and intensify contacts with German and especially foreign visitors,” emphasised Bodo Mehrlein, Managing Director of the German Association of the Cigar Industry (Bundesverband der Zigarrenindustrie - BdZ). The next InterTabac trade fair will take place from 18 to 20 September 2020 – of course again in the halls of the Dortmund Exhibition Centre. The layout planning will start mid-February 2020. Space can already be booked now.
New CIGAR SPECIAL Event:
InterTabac will offer its new ‘Cigar Special’ format for the first time next year. It will give cigar manufacturers and importers a special platform to perfectly present the cigar topic with various activities and campaigns for the retail trade. Whether it be pairings, the showcasing of new products and complementary product lines, the presentation of companies or the opportunities for networking and doing business, the ‘Cigar Special 2020’ event at InterTabac will seek and promote the close exchange of information with the industry.
